Navy WAVES veteran Lois Williams

Navy Waves veteran Lois Williams, 86, of Monroeville, served in World War II. She also played the saxophone in the WAVES “Wave Quarters ‘D’ Band.”
The WAVES were a World War II-era division of the U.S. Navy that began in August 1942, and consisted entirely of women. The name of this group is an acronym for “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. The word “emergency” implied that the acceptance of women was due to the unusual circumstances of the war and that at the end of the war the women would not be allowed to continue in Navy careers.
I like this portrait. I like her being so close to the camera, I like her hands, I like the light, and the old photo as well.
